Imtiaz Ali fans find his films philosophical and deeply spiritual, and in a recent interview, the filmmaker spoke about read religious texts when he was a child, and how they profoundly influenced him. He shared that he read the Rig Veda as a child and was introduced to the Bhagvad Gita when he was around 10 years old. The director of Jab We Met said his introduction to the Bhagvad Gita happened because it was the only book he could afford to buy from a station bookstore, but it had a profound impact on him .
He recalled the incident and shared that he was only 10 years old when he traveled alone by train. As Imtiaz had a few dollars with him and wanted to buy reading materials for his journey, he entered a bookstore at the station. “The only book that was available cheaply at the time, it's so ironic, was the Bhagvad Gita. It was a small, thick book. So, I thought I will buy this, it was the only thing I could afford,” he shared with Ranveer Allahbadia.
“I knew that when people saw me reading this book, they would think it was a strange choice. Of course, I had heard of the Bhagvad Gita. I thought that was good, it would also give a good impression. But after all that, when I started reading it, it was so easy to understand. There was hardly anything in it that I didn’t understand, but there was a lot of stuff that I read 5 to 10 times,” he said.

Imtiaz said that after this he would read a few pages of the Bhagvad Gita every day. “The Bhagvad Gita has been an important thing in my life. It’s the little book that was always kept on my side table,” he shared and added, “It was miraculous that I was lucky enough to be exposed to it.”
Imtiaz said that besides this, he also reads other religious texts and is “deeply entertained” by them. “They come up with some very interesting things,” he said, adding that he had read the Rig Veda daily for a long period of his life.
