Hollywood Actress and Entrepreneur Malinda Williams Hosts Coding Boot Camp at JSU

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – A Hollywood actress visited Jackson State University Saturday on a mission to empower young women who want to pursue a career in computer science.

Actress Malinda Williams says it's a coding bootcamp for HBCUs called ESTEAM, which stands for Entrepreneurship, Science, Technology, Engineering Arts and Math.

The aim is to enthuse and prepare many girls to enter the field of IT.

Knowing that she took the time to learn to code while society was facing different issues is empowering and inspiring, said JSU student KaPri Burden.

Dozens of girls like Burden were under one roof at the Jackson State Science Building Saturday for a one-on-one with the actress.

All students participated in various coding activities and workshops such as app development, STEAM training, and Apple programming language. They also learned how to create their own website.

Willimas was also able to share his knowledge with students and his personal experiences in the industry.

Computers only produce what is put into them, Williams said. We need to have a say in the programming and information that goes into these systems so that what we have experienced can be reflected in what comes out.

Williams says the four-week training is part of his nonprofit foundation, Arise and Shine.

It aims to help young women from HBCUs achieve career success in computer technology through hands-on experiences. Burden says it's a declining industry with people who look like him.

So far, the computer industry is already stat-poor for black women, Burden said. So to be part of a program that supports that and wants to push us to increase those numbers is something that I'm very proud to be a part of.

Not only did the young group of women receive training, but they were also able to take part in sessions to build their confidence and motivation, which Willams says is very important.

We give them a foundation of trust, we love them and let them know that they are valued and supported and if there is anything we can do to make their future even brighter and know that they can walk into any room and possess it, these are some of the concepts that we want to transmit to them, instill in them, teach them and demonstrate to them.

Williams says his time in the capital has been nothing short of incredible and it's an honor to work with a great group of students.
