Tony Award-winning actor alleges housing discrimination in Harlem – NBC New York
A Tony Award-winning actor with dozens of television and film credits is calling attention to housing discrimination in New York.
Wendell Pierce, known for his roles in “The Wire,” “Suits” and “Jack Ryan,” posted to X last week, detailing his “righteous anger” after being denied an apartment in Harlem. Pierce, who is black, said a white apartment turned down his application, despite having a high income and many assets.
“Racism and bigots are real. There are those who will do anything to destroy the life journey of black people. When you deny our personal experiences, you are just as vile and despicable,” his message read.
Pierce said the incident happened last year, but he decided to speak out about it now after a recent U.S. Court of Appeals panel barred investors from devoting grants to Black women-owned businesses.
