Turns out it's the one thing everyone came together for The Hollywood Reporterit's annual Drama Actors Emmy Roundtable has in common the fact that they all lied to get a job.
“All the time,” jokes Nicholas Galitzine, of both Starz. Mary and George and Prime Video Red, white and royal bluewhen the question is first asked.
Travel companions” Matt Bomer is just as quick to confess. “I absolutely figure skate, I play ice hockey. Roller skates. Yes, years of experience,” he says with a laugh.
The lies vary, of course; just like the consequences. But the six men gathered that April afternoon at the Georgian Hotel police station for at least one lie – and unsurprisingly, it rarely ended well. Clive Owens (Mister Spade, A murder at the end of the world) said he could ride horses – a lie that came back to bite him when he landed the lead role in King Arthur. “A nightmarish experience,” he told the assembly. David Oyelowo (Lawmen: Bass Reeves) once insisted that he knew how to roller skate, which, he discovered in real time, is not the same thing as knowing how to roller skate. And Jon Hamm (Fargo, Murder at the End of the World) suggested he might play ice hockey, but was caught in his lie during the audition for the film Miracleabout the 1980 American hockey team.
“The movie turned out great, one of my favorite sports movies of all time,” he says, adding with a laugh, “And I’m not in it.”
For Galitzine, the lies are usually more personal in nature. “It’s like being able to grow my facial hair and look older than I am,” he says. “I'm like, 'Yeah, no, I'll come with a little beard.' I'll definitely look like I'm 34 when I arrive, not a prepubescent 20-year-old. But I'm still waiting for that. Calum Turner (Airbenders) smiles and shrugs: “I’m with you, man,” he says. “I can’t cultivate it. If only I could.”
