Bureau of Land Management saves wild burros in the Mojave Desert
Due to extreme temperatures and insufficient water availability, the Bureau of Land Management recently initiated an emergency roundup of 50 wild burros.
The agency began the project using a temporary water and bait trap method in the Piute Mountain herd area in the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County, the agency said.
Located south of Interstate 40 and east of Barstow, the wilderness ranges from 2,000 to 4,132 feet, with numerous canyons and washes.
This emergency roundup will protect the health of wild burros in the Piute Mountain herd area, Needles Field Director Ron Nuckles said of the May 31 roundup. Fenner Spring is the only water source in the area and does not produce enough water to support wild burros and other wildlife on the landscape.
After the roundup, the office transported the animals to Ridgecrest Regional Wild Horse and Burro Corrals, where they will be made available for adoption or sale.

To minimize disruption to animals and allow office staff to safely conduct round-up operations, there will be no public viewing, the office said.
The Bureau of Land Management conducted the collection as part of the capture plan for the collection and removal of wild burros in the Piute Mountain herd area.

Free-Roaming Wild Horses and Burros Act of 1971 directs federal protection and management of wild horses and burros on public lands. The BLM created the Wild Horse and Burro Program to manage and protect wild horses and burros, on and off the range, while striving to maintain rangeland health.
