Darshan murder case: Darshan Thoogudeepa, leading actor of Kannada cinema, arrested in murder case
The 47-year-old was arrested in connection with the murder of a man, identified as Renuka Swamy, on June 9 in the city's Kamakshipalya area, he said.
After the alleged murder, the body of Swamy, who worked in a pharmaceutical company and hailed from district headquarters Chitradurga, was dumped in a storm drain in Kamakshipalya.
“Based on the discovery of the dead body of an unidentified man and injuries on his body, a case of murder was registered. Based on the CCTV footage and other technical evidence, the deceased was identified as being Renuka Swamy,” Dayananda said.
“We have arrested the Kannada film actor and his aides and are questioning him. Since the investigation is ongoing, I cannot share further details,” he said.
When asked if Darshan had been arrested, he said, “He has been taken into custody and is being questioned. Further proceedings will follow after due process.”
It is alleged that the deceased had made derogatory comments against a film actress in a social media post. Police learned of the murder after local residents alerted them.
The body was sent for autopsy and the forensic report confirmed that he was murdered, police sources said.
Further investigation led to the arrest of some suspects, who revealed the truth, a police official said.
Based on their statement, police arrested Darshan from a hotel in Mysuru, sources said.
Police are investigating whether the actor was directly involved in the murder or was part of the plot, the sources added.
Meanwhile, sources said that the actress against whom the deceased had made unfavorable comments has also been arrested for questioning.
Renuka Swamy's parents were inconsolable after learning of the murder.
“He was my only son. He got married last year. I spoke to him on Saturday only. I want justice,” his father Srinivasaiah told reporters at Kamakshipalya police station.
Police provided tight security at the house of Darshan, who is followed by a large number of fans, at RR Nagar here.
Darshan made his debut as a lead actor in the film 'Majestic' in 2002.
He has featured in several commercially successful films including “Kariya”, “Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna”, “Kalasipalya”, “Gaja”, “Navagraha”, “Saarathi”, “Bulbul”, “Yajaamana”, “Robert” and ” Kaatera.”
