Kannada actor Darshan and his friend Pavithra sent to police custody for six days in murder case

Bengaluru: A Bengaluru court has remanded Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, his long-time friend Pavithra Gowda and 11 others to six-day judicial remand in connection with the murder of a Chitradurga man.

Darshan, 47, a Kannada film star, is accused of masterminding the kidnapping and murder of Renukaswamy, 33, who allegedly posted obscene messages about Pavithra on Instagram.

A Kamakshipalya police team from Bengaluru apprehended Darshan from Radisson Blu Plaza hotel in Mysuru, his hometown, around 8:30 am on Tuesday. He was then brought to Bengaluru and taken to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital for a medical check-up.

In the evening, Darshan, Pavithra and the other 11 suspects were produced before the 24th Additional Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Nrupathunga Road. The court granted the police's request to interrogate them in custody for six days.

Renukaswamy's body was discovered in a drain near an apartment complex in Sumanahalli, northwest Bengaluru, on the morning of June 9. The next day, four suspects went to the police, claiming to have murdered Renukaswamy following a financial dispute.

Police sources told DH that Renukaswamy was brought from Chitradurga to Bengaluru on June 8, kept in a shed in RR Nagar belonging to one of the suspects and severely beaten. He was fatally injured in the groin and at least 10 other places. His body was then transported about 12 km to Sumanahalli in northwest Bengaluru and dumped in the drains.

As the police dug deeper, a larger conspiracy surrounding the murder was uncovered, which brought suspicion down on Darshan, the sources said.

“We have taken him (Darshan) into custody for the murder of a man named Renukaswamy. The case has been registered at Kamakshipalya police station,” said S Girish, deputy commissioner of police (West).
