Swamy's body was found early on Sunday in a drain in Bengalurus Kamakshipalya area, about 200 km from Chitradurga from where he was abducted the day before. Investigations indicated that the pharmacy employee was beaten and tortured to death before his body was dumped. Darshan and the others were remanded in police custody for six days.
According to police sources, Swamy's alleged comments against Pavitra, 37, on social media reportedly angered his 47-year-old star. Darshan is accused of kidnapping Swamy and being present alongside Pavithra when he was beaten to death.
Darshan had been arrested earlier for attempting to murder his wife in 2011. Pavithra, who has acted in a few films and now runs a boutique in Bangalore, says she and Darshan have been together for over 10 years. Darshan and his wife later reached a compromise in the attempt to murder case and she withdrew her complaint in court.
On Tuesday, Darshan was picked up from a star hotel in Mysuru around 8:30 am and brought to Bengaluru.
He has been shooting in Mysuru since June 9 for his upcoming film Devil, made following his phenomenal success Kaatera.
Others arrested in the case Raghavendra, Vinay, Lakshman, Nandeesha, Nikhil, Keshava Murthy, Kartik, Pradosh, Nagaraj, Pavan and Deepak are friends, associates and collaborators of the film star. Cops are looking for four other suspects.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Pavan, who works at Darshans RR Nagar residence, had created a fake Instagram account in the name of Pavithras and was chatting with Swamy for the last two months. Believing it to be Pavitra, Swamy continued to abuse her. Pavan then showed these discussions to Darshan.
Raghavendra and some others kidnapped Swamy from Chitradurga on Saturday morning. Swamy, who was on his way to the pharmacy, was put in a car and brought to (Bengalurus) RR Nagar around 3:30 p.m., a senior police officer said.
The officer added: Raghavendra and others locked Swamy in a shed belonging to Vinay in RR Nagar. First, Raghavendra, Jagadish, Raju, Karthik and Nikhil defeated Swamy. In the evening, Darshan and others visited Swamy and a second round of beating took place. Late in the evening, Pavithra arrived and another round of beating followed. Swamy died on the spot.
In the wee hours of Sunday, some of the accused drove with Swamy's body and dumped it near a drain in Kamakshipalya area. They wanted to throw the body into the sewer. Hastily, they left the body next to it, the police officer said. A guard at a nearby apartment noticed the body and alerted the cops.
