Kartik Aaryan says foreigners don't get extra chance in Bollywood, any film could be their last: 'A mistake…'
Kartik Aaryan opens up on the baggage of being an outsider in Bollywood and why fear and anxiety are actors' constant companions
The foreign term stuck with Kartik throughout his Bollywood journey. This is not a derogatory term, mind you. This denotes his status as having no connection to any cinematic family, having made a name for himself on his own. But even at the peak of his career today, Kartik says that as an outsider, his anxiety has not left him. In a candid chat with DNA, the actor talks about this fear and when will it go away.
Many actors have said that outsiders in Bollywood are always on the edge, afraid to prove themselves in all their films. Kartik agrees with this: “You still feel the same. When you come from the outside, this fear remains and never goes away. You don't get those extra opportunities. We have to make sure that this is my last film and I have to give 200% here. If something goes wrong, you're gone.
And when will Kartik feel that fear will disappear? The actor responds: “That thought still remains. That was the case at the beginning, it is still the case today and perhaps it will remain so in the future as well. I don't think this thought will go away. I've now spent enough time in the industry and made enough films, but it doesn't leave you.
The actor clarifies that he has nothing against the so-called “insiders”, actors from cinema families. “It’s not someone’s fault if they were born into a family that belongs to cinema,” he says, adding, “But it happens in this industry. If someone from my family is making a film, I can approach them. It's not a bad thing to do this. But sometimes these opportunities disappear and you have to forge your own path.
But after making a name for himself during his 13-year journey in Bollywood, Kartik says being a proverbial outsider has made his achievements sweeter. “That’s also what’s fun. Whatever I accomplished, I did it on my own. No one can take it away from me. Whatever films I make, I do it with my intuition. It's not like anyone did me a favor or I did anyone a favor. I can face the mirror and say that whatever I do, it's the right way. It’s very important to me,” sums up the actor.
Kartik is currently awaiting the release of his next film Chandu Champion, a biopic of war hero turned Paralympic champion Murlikant Petkar. The film also stars Bhuvan Arora, Yashpal Sharma, Vijay Raaz, Rajpal Yadav and Palak Lalwani. The Kabir Khan directorial hits theaters on June 14.
