South Florida received nearly 20 inches of rain in 48 hours

Nearly 20 inches of rain fell in several south Broward cities over the past two days, with some areas breaking records, forecasters said. The rest will be available on Thursday.

The hardest hit city in the past 48 hours was Hallandale Beach, followed closely by Hollywood. The latest rainfall totals show Hallandale flooded with 19.39 inches and Hollywood with 19.10. Residents of these towns continued to wade through flooded streets and blocked cars Thursday morning. Meanwhile, North Miami surpassed the 20-inch mark.

Davie also topped the list with 17.97 inches. Other cities that experienced severe flooding recorded slightly less than their counterparts in total precipitation over the past 48 hours: Fort Lauderdale recorded 12.64 inches and Dania Beach, 10.65 inches.

Most of the rain in Fort Lauderdale occurred on a single day. On Wednesday, the waterlogged city set a new record for single-day rainfall during the month of June with 9.54 inches, surpassing the previous record for the same day in June of 5.47 inches in 1978.

Still, Wednesday didn't come close to surpassing the record deluge of April 2023 in which the city experienced 26 inches of rain in one day, most of it in a seven-hour period.
