Kieran Culkin Didn't Want to Be an Actor Before 'Succession' Season 1
Even though Kieran Culkin may now be an Emmy-winning actor, he didn't realize it was a career he wanted to pursue until halfway through. Succession first season.
The actor spoke with Jesse Eisenberg in conversation at the Tribeca Festival where they discussed their decades-long career in the entertainment industry, their upcoming film. A real pain and more.
When asked if he considered doing anything other than acting, Culkin shared that he had just talked about it with his longtime manager, Emily Gerson Saines, who told him that acting was in his mind. somehow imposed because he had been doing it since he was 6 years old.
“Suddenly, around the age of 20, I had a phone call with Emily and she said, ‘Something, something, something, your career,’” he recalls. “I remember panicking and thinking, 'I have a fucking career? I was only 6 years old and I was doing this, and I never chose to do this for myself. So I had this kind of crisis around 19 or 20, which I think is pretty normal.
He went on to explain that after realizing he never chose acting, he didn't work for a while and tried to figure out what he wanted. On the set of 2017 infinite babyhe remembers feeling comfortable and settling into acting, something he would do for a living because at least he knew how to do it.
“It's only about halfway through the first season of Succession, where I came home and I was having a conversation with my wife, and I was like, 'I think I know I want to make a living.' I want to be an actor.' At that point, I had been doing this for about 31 years. I spent a good two decades trying to figure out what else to do, and then I landed on what I was doing.
Culkin won an Emmy for his portrayal of Roman Roy in the final season of Succession.
