The Blair Witch Project Cast Talks About How Hollywood Treated Them

In 1999, The Blair Witch Project ushered in the era of found-footage horror films, and it had the unique twist of a marketing campaign that claimed its actors – Heather Donahue, Michael Williams and Joshua Leonard – had in reality disappeared while they investigated. a local legend and it was feared that they were dead. The film grossed $248.6 million on an initial budget estimated between $35,000 and $60,000. It also sparked the start of a two-decade fight to get stars properly compensated.

Last month, Lionsgate announced plans to make a new Blair Witch Project film that will be produced by Jason Blum and Roy Lee. In response, Donahue, Williams and Leonard released an open letter requesting “meaningful consultation” for any projects using their names and faces as well as retroactive and future payments for the original Blair Witch Project as if it had been filmed under SAG- AFTRA Rules. Afterwards, the trio spoke with Variety at length about the struggle they have endured over the past 25 years.

“I’m very grateful for what I have now and how I fought to get it,” Williams said. “But it still affects me. I buried it all. The giant corporations don't care if this happens to young artists. It's bullshit. And it has to change somehow. I Hope we help someone see: don't do what we did.”

The report details the work the trio not only put into making the film and filming most of it themselves, but also maintaining the illusion that they were dead and living with the legacy of a film using their real names. Their initial compensation was reportedly in the five figures before the trio took Artisan to court in 2002 and ultimately won a settlement of $300,000 each. Part of the terms of that deal required the studio to stop using their names and likenesses to sell the film and its sequels. But as Donahue notes, “they keep doing it anyway.”

Williams and Donahue have since settled into lives outside of the entertainment industry, but Leonard is still a working actor. And he's very upfront about his position with Lionsgate.

“I don’t need Lionsgate to like me,” Leonard said. “I don't care if they know that I think their behavior is wrong. I don't want my daughter to feel like anything is more valuable than her personal worth.”

It's unclear whether the trio's efforts will allow Lionsgate to patch things up with them or properly compensate them. Since the original Blair Witch Project was a non-union production, SAG-AFTRA has no jurisdiction over the conflict.
