Hannah Einbinder Uses Comedy as a Coping Mechanism in Her First Stand-Up Special

LOS ANGELES (AP) To the rising comedian Hannah Einbinder, his songs are not just for laughs. She says her jokes are a coping mechanism she uses to deal with the difficult topics she covers in her material.

Einbinder, known for matching Jean Smarts quick wit and comic timing Hacks, released his first stand-up special on Max to critical acclaim on Thursday. Throughout her set, she addresses several difficult topics, including gender identity and climate change.

Climate change is something I think about every day when I look out the window at the Earth in front of my eyes, so it's something I definitely wanted to address, Einbinder told the Associated Press. It's just something that overwhelms my consciousness and that's why I write about it.

Einbinder says she thinks of almost everything through the lens of comedy, adding that this habit is a classic coping mechanism or survival instinct.

The special, Everything Must Go, was the product of regular tours and workshops as Einbinder presented the show across the United States and abroad. She says the audience lets her know very quickly if a joke was flat, and she's constantly tweaked her comedic passages to figure out which lines stick.

My jokes are very long, she adds. Each joke is very long, and they were much longer. This is as short as I have made them, they are very long and they always get cut off. I write a lot and then cut, but yeah, I just keep the stuff that feels high octane and is good enough to stay in.

In one memorable passage, Einbinder sings a song in Hebrew to enhance a story, a song that she believes is truly true. She said she knew the timing was unconventional for a stand-up special, but she enjoyed leaning into it.

“It’s a choice where I choose to build tension and then build it up to a certain point and then release it,” she said.

The Hacks star who is the Saturday Night Live alum's daughter Laraine Newman and comedian Chad Einbinder, also said she wasn't afraid to incorporate her more personal stories on stage because she was something of an open book.

All comedians present themselves exactly how they want to be seen, which I think is not even always a very vulnerable thing, actually, she said. In fact, it's a bit like: This is my version of me, this is the augmented version of me. This is the most wrapped up version of me with a bow.
