Renukasawamy murder: How Bengaluru police cracked the case and arrested actor Darshan
A coordinated operation by three senior officers of the Bengaluru Police quickly solved the Renukasawamy murder case and arrested Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa through rapid action and meticulous attention to detail.
The body of Renukasawamy, a 33-year-old motorist, was found near a flyover in Bengaluru on June 9. Two days later, on June 11, the Karnataka police arrested actor Darshan. Investigation revealed that Renukasawamy was kidnapped and murdered by a gang under his leadership.
Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda personally supervised the case, while the investigation led by Bengaluru West Zone Deputy Commissioner (DCP) S Girish led to a major breakthrough in the case. Deputy Commissioner Chandan Kumar arrested the actor.
It was S Girish's investigation that established the link between Darshan and the murder. He quickly identified inconsistencies in the statements of three men who went to police, admitting their involvement in the murder.
Girish's initial puzzle was why four men from Bangalore had killed a victim from Chitradurga, 200 kilometers away. DCP Girish detected flaws in their accounts and took up the investigation into Vinay V, a restaurateur in RR Nagar, Bengaluru.
Vinay informed the DCP that Darshan was upset by Renukasawamy's remarks on social media about his wife, actor Pavithra Gowda, and the fact that Renukasawamy had been tortured at Darshan's behest. Further investigation revealed a CCTV footage linking vehicles associated with Darshan near the crime scene.
Once Darshan's connection was established, the police decided to arrest the actor.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vijayanagara, Chandan Kumar, was tasked with arresting Darshan in Mysore.
Chandan arrived at the Mysore hotel where Darshan was staying early in the morning of June 11. Despite Darshan's insistence to travel in his own vehicle, the ACP rejected his request and forced him into the police vehicle.
Chandan told the actor, “You are an accused. You have no choice. Either you get into the police car or we will not hesitate to hold your collar and push you inside .Shut up and get in the car.” .
There was reportedly pressure from political circles, influential people and Darshan's fan groups to go easy on the actor. However, under the supervision of Commissioner B Dayananda, the matter was resolved within a few days. He guided Girish and Kumar throughout the investigation and also went to personally inspect the evidence to ensure that the case was watertight.
The police team also analyzed technical data, including the location of mobile towers and call records.
Investigation revealed that Renukasawamy allegedly made derogatory comments about Gowda on social media, accusing him of causing a rift between Darshan and his wife.
One of the accused, Raghavendra, a member of Darshan's fan club in Chitradurga, lured Renukasawamy to a shed in RR Nagar on the pretext of meeting Darshan. It's here that Renukasawamy was tortured and killed. Darshan himself assaulted the victim, the investigation revealed.
Darshan, Pavithra Gowda and 12 of their associates were arrested in connection with the murder. A Bangalore court on Saturday extended the police custody of actor Pavithra and others by five days, till June 20.
