Google Killed the Media Industry: Layoffs and Buyouts Friday at Daily Beast Hollywood Reporter, The Sun, Canada Media
Google – and AI – do as expected – often killing the media industry.
Yesterday there were again a lot of layoffs, all high-level people with a lot of experience. Forget print sales! Internet traffic is down. It started last September, when Google made a radical change to its algorithm.
But now it's even worse, web traffic, which has dropped like a stone in the last three months. Some sites have seen their readership cut in half, with Google and other search engines pointing to artificially created links.
Yesterday, The Penske Group's The Hollywood Reporter laid off several employees, including longtime TV editor Lesley Goldberg and editor Rebecca Sun (who had previously been fired and rehired). Penske owns Reporter, Variety, Deadline, Rolling Stone and Billboard, among others. I am told these layoffs are not the end.
The Daily Beast has reportedly offered to buy out 70% of its unionized staff. The non-union staff comes next as former Hearst editor Joanna Coles and ABC News chief Ben Sherwood take the reins to save the Beast from closure.
Media News: The Daily Beast takeover results are in, and they're about to gut the site. 25 (or 70%) of unionized employees were bought out, including almost all of the most experienced journalists. Meanwhile, non-union editors are expecting a round of layoffs at the end of the month.

On The Sun.com there is a rumor that more people have been sent. According to Semrush, The Sun.com has lost 20 million visitors since February. I'm surprised given that YahooNews just told me that it relies on tabloid information. Go figure.
In Canada, 35 journalists were fired by Global News. This is in addition to the 11 who have already received the ax this year.
I read sarcastic comments about all these layoffs, who think layoffs in the media are funny or that they deserve it. How stupid can people be? Is there really a desire for a fascist dictator – Donald Trump – and no free press? Were education programs cut so deeply in the 1980s that we had a generation of ignorance? As media diminishes, so do opportunities to know what's going on in the world, whether you like it or not. The media contracts, the more you should worry.
And back to the title: Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, etc. are the bad guys, and they do all this without control. The government has yet to step in for any type of oversight or regulation. We were warned about AI over a year ago, and no one took it seriously.
