Eastpointe and Warren hold Juneteenth events this week – Macomb Daily
Eastpointe will hold its first Juneteenth celebration on June 19 in the City Hall courtyard.
The event is coordinated by the city's Arts and Cultural Diversity Commission and commission chairwoman Wanda Moody said she expects the event to grow and evolve each year.
“Last year I had a tent at the Gratiot cruise representing Juneteenth and I the year before, the former mayor had organized an event on Juneteenth, but this is the start of an urban event” , Moody said.
Juneteenth commemorates the day when 250,000 slaves in the state of Texas learned of President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation two years after it was issued and were declared free by the U.S. Army.
The Juneteenth celebration in Eastpointe will feature the George Washington Carver Dance Academy Club, singer Arnesia Jones, music from the Sound Proof Band and comments from Mayor Michael Klinefelt and Pastor Kevin Lancaster of Love Life Family Christian Center.
“We will have speakers explaining the reason for celebrating Juneteenth and we will also have stickers and different gifts to give away,” Moody said.
There will also be food trucks and other vendors.
The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m. and Moody advises attendees to bring their lawn chairs and blankets and plan to stay to enjoy all the fun.
Warren will hold its second annual event on June 22, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., at Warren City Hall.
The Inna Zone Band with Nina Simone and the Big Soul Band with Smoke Jones will provide entertainment. There will be a special presentation from 2-3 p.m. celebrating freedom.
The Warren event is hosted by the Warren Cultural Commission, Macomb NAACP, Michigan Families for Fair Care, the Papasian Library for Equity and Inclusion and resident Michael Howard.
