'Seinfeld' actor and New York comedian Hiram Kasten dies at 71
Actor Hiram Kasten, best known for his work on “Seinfeld,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Saved By the Bell,” has died at the age of 71.
The New York native's wife, Diana Kisiel Kastenbaum, announced his death in a statement. Facebook post Sunday, revealing that the actor was battling prostate cancer.
The actor died in his wife's arms “just hours after their 38th wedding anniversary,” the message read.
In addition to cancer, Kasten had been battling Crohn's disease for seven years. He died at his home in Batavia, New York.
While Kasten's “health had deteriorated and he was no longer playing or actively pursuing his career” as of 2017, “he only started sharing the senior year of it all with his friends in over the last six months,” the message reads.
His “large comedy and arts community rallied to his side,” while “some traveled to Batavia to visit him, late-night Zoom meetings with friends on both coasts followed and continued until 'in the early hours of the morning'.
“Being able to laugh with his peers extended his life by at least two months,” his wife added.
A funeral service will be held at a later date at the Schwartz Brothers-Jeffers Memorial Chapel in Forest Hills, New York.
A formal memorial service will be held in Los Angeles, California later this summer.
Kasten is best known for his role as Michael on “Seinfeld” from 1993 to 1994. His character was Elane Benes' colleague to Julia Louis-Dreyfus' character.
The actor earned his stripes in the comedy world by making a name for himself in the New York comedy circuit after becoming a regular performer at the Comic Strip – an iconic venue that once hosted Jerry Seinfeld.
Seinfeld “passed Hiram on his first audition and he became a regular,” with the pair forming “a friendship that has lasted 45 years,” Diana wrote in the post.
Kasten also had friendships with Michael Richards, Paul Reiser, Larry Miller and Mark Schiff.
Kasten has also performed stand-up at The Improv, The Comedy Cellar, Carolines and Dangerfields.
In addition to his work on “Seinfeld,” Kasten has made guest appearances on “Saved By the Bell,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Cybill,” “Mad About You” and “Everybody Loves Raymond.”
In the early 2000s, Kasten made guest appearances on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” “My Wife and Kids” and “7th Heaven.”
The Bronx-born actor is survived by his wife Diana, daughter Millicent Jade and brother-in-law Kevin John Kisiel.
