Construction Begins to Fix Dangerous Hollywood Boulevard Intersection, What You Need to Know
Work begins Monday on a dangerous stretch of Hollywood Boulevard, according to Los Angeles City Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez's office.
THE long awaited project plans to slow down speeding drivers, protect bikers, improve access to public transportation and keep more people safe as they travel along the popular corridor between Gower Street and Lyman Place.
This corridor is dangerous. Between 2010 and 2019, there were 53 serious injuries and fatal collisions in this project area alone, Los Angeles Department of Transportation planner Max Podemski said at a public meeting on the project earlier this year.
What you should expect
Posted speed limits on the two-mile stretch will be slower. LADOT said once completed, the project will add one to five minutes to your commute through the region, depending on the time of day.
There will also be lane changes for some turn-only lanes. Drivers can expect some red lights to last 10 to 40 seconds longer, which will give pedestrians more time to cross certain intersections safely.
Parking will also be impacted throughout the project area as crews make room for a dedicated bike lane and new bus loading areas. LADOT will add more than double the space available for pedestrians and cyclists, but you'll have to look elsewhere to find parking.
Why this makeover?
City officials said the new safety changes would address speeding issues and curb rising traffic fatalities near Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards.
The number of road deaths in Los Angeles reaches all-time highs again in 2023. In total, 336 people died in accidents, about half of whom were pedestrians.
Soto-Martinez told LAist the project would also facilitate access to the B (red) subway line while boosting business in the neighborhood.
“This project aims to make travel safer and easier for people. After the improvements made this summer, Hollywood will be more welcoming to businesses, residents and tourists,” Soto-Martinez said.

The Hollywood Blvd Safety and Mobility Project is part of a larger effort to connect Los Angeles through all modes of travel. A similar facelift is in preparation for Los Feliz and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Work on Hollywood Boulevard is expected to be completed by Aug. 18, according to Soto-Martinez's office.
