An iconic Hollywood fast food restaurant is closing its doors for good

One of Hollywood's most recognizable neon signs has gone dark forever.

Arbys Roast Beef Restaurant at 5920 Sunset Blvd. closed Saturday after 55 years of activity.

Customers arrived to find workers covering windows and doors with plywood and a message saying Goodbye Hollywood. TY for 55 beautiful years.

Since its opening on January 5, 1969, the Arbys had only one owner, Marilyn Leviton, now 91 years old.

Leviton told KTLA 5 News, located less than a block from the restaurant, has struggled to stay open for years.

The truth is, I think it was the pandemic that destroyed us. I really feel like we would have closed during the pandemic. [if it werent] for federal loans, she said.

Other factors, Leviton said, include California's recent law raising the minimum wage for fast food workers from $16 to $20 an hour and equipment upgrades required by corporate headquarters. Arbys.

I'm really sorry it's come to this. I think we've done a good job for 55 years, Leviton said.

KTLA has contacted Arby's for comment.

Critics of California's new minimum wage law, including many in the fast food industry, have derided it as bad for business and customers. Restaurants responded by raising their menu prices and, in some cases, laying off staff.
