Woman's Lost Luggage Ended Up At Hollywood Homeless Encampment – NBC Los Angeles
A woman demands answers from American Airlines after her luggage ended up in a Hollywood homeless encampment.
Aunny Grace was able to find him thanks to an Apple AirTag in her suitcase, but now she wants to know how he got there.
Grace said the travel headache started at the Dallas airport on May 29.th when his flight was delayed.
American Airlines left thousands of people stranded at the airport overnight for days, Grace said.
She spent the night at the Dallas airport while waiting for her return flight to Hollywood Burbank Airport. She understood that her luggage would be delayed, but was not prepared for what happened next.
When the carrier called me he told me he was at my house. I looked over and saw my AirTag flickering very slowly on Western Avenue, like no direction, really,” Grace said. “I knew intuitively something was wrong. Something was wrong.”
Five days after her flight, Grace received the wrong suitcase.
But thanks to the Apple Airtag in her luggage, she was able to track her bag to a homeless encampment in Hollywood.
“Between midnight and 7 a.m. my bag ended up at Homeless Town Hollywood. I was crying just grabbing my stuff,” she said. “I had jewelry, medicine, bags that I had bought in Bali, Peru. My toiletry bag was overturned, completely empty. My makeup bag, empty. This homeless man just went through my things.”
Grace said a homeless man told her he bought it on the street.
I want to know: How did my suitcase get from the Burbank airport to a homeless encampment in Hollywood, on the corner of Western and Sunset? Grace said.
As she searched for her items, she noticed other bags as well.
I saw suitcases with American Airlines tags on them, Grace said.
She filed a report with Burbank Airport police, saying the section with delayed bags is not in a secure area.
Anyone could come by and collect their bags, one after the other. There were hundreds of bags out in the open, out of sight of the office, Grace said.
Grace also contacted American Airlines, which told her it would refund up to $1,700 for her items, well below what she says are worth more than $6,300. She also demands answers because she never wants anyone else to experience this travel nightmare.
This will continue until someone takes responsibility. This should be the responsibility of the airline, Grace said.
Grace said the experience put her off stealing. She's currently in Boston visiting family, but she drove across the country instead of taking another flight.
Burbank police said they have their report, but ultimately it is the air carrier's responsibility to ensure delivery of passengers' items.
NBC4 also reached out to American Airlines for clarification, but the company did not respond.
