Construction begins on Hollywood Boulevard Improvement Project
Along Hollywood Boulevard, construction is in full swing for the first phase of the improvement project between Lyman Place and Gower Street, with safety in mind.
Hammed Esa said he witnesses a car accident at least once a month. Esa said he got into a car accident while waiting at a red light just a few months ago.
“All of a sudden a car came up behind me and hit me,” Esa said.
The street is being resurfaced to add protected bike lanes, meaning portions of the boulevard will be reduced from two lanes to a single lane.
Some residents, like Sam Brodnitz, are excited about the construction.
“I actually don’t have a driver’s license,” Brodnitz said. “I cycle, so the idea of cycle paths sounds very exciting to me. But I completely understand. I know there are often bottlenecks here. I can also see that it's frustrating for people.”
Commander Craig Valenzuela, head of the Los Angeles Police Department's traffic unit, welcomes the changes as they slow down traffic.
Fatal crashes have steadily increased since 2021. That year, there were 294 fatal crashes in Los Angeles. In 2022, there were 314 and 345 last year.
“This trend line continues to rise and quite sharply,” he said. “Just a reminder, last year we had more traffic fatalities than criminal homicides.”
Nick Barnes-Batista, spokesman for Los Angeles City Council District 13, said he won't ride his bike on the boulevard until the improvements are made. He believes the new bike lanes and other traffic calming measures will protect pedestrians.
“Hollywood Boulevard is a high-injury network,” he said. “This is part of the 8% of city streets that account for 70% of city street deaths.”
Work between Lyman Place and Gower Street is expected to be completed by the end of July. The improvement project will extend to the road between Gower Street and La Brea Avenue by next year.
