Luggage lost on American Airlines flight found in Hollywood homeless encampment
(KTLA) A Southern California woman whose luggage went missing after an American Airlines flight to Hollywood Burbank Airport says she later found her bag at a homeless encampment in Hollywood.
Aunny Grace said that after her May 29 American Airlines flight to Dallas, Texas, was canceled, she went to Burbank on another flight without her luggage.
Five days later, my luggage arrived in Burbank on a Sunday evening, she explained. Monday morning, I receive a call from a transport company who tells me that they will drop off my luggage at my house.
However, Grace had an Apple AirTag in her bag and could see that it wasn't delivered to her home. Using the GPS tracker, she drove to the area of Sunset Boulevard and Western Avenue to find her luggage.
When I arrived, my bag had slowly made its way towards Santa Monica and Western, and that's when I found my belongings, not my suitcase, but particles of my belongings in the shopping cart of a sans -shelter, Grace said. You kind of get to a point where you look around camp and think, I don't even want my stuff back. I had toiletry bags that were thrown upside down. I had makeup bags. All the makeup was gone.
She said she had no idea how her bag ended up in the homeless encampment, but told Nexstars KTLA she saw what appeared to be many other stolen bags in the area .
That day I saw dozens of suitcases, brand new suitcases, designer suitcases scattered across Western and Sunset, Grace said. Rows and rows of suitcases, bikes, strollers with airline tags on them everywhere.
She is now demanding answers from American Airlines, filing a complaint with the airline and reporting it to the police department. She also hired a lawyer.
Grace said the area at Burbank Airport where delayed bags are stored is not secure and some bags are placed on the sidewalk outside the terminal.
They showed me pictures of how American Airlines drops off bags for people to pick up, but I don't blame that on the homeless, she said. I put that on the airline. American Airlines is responsible for my bag and practically requires you to check it at the gate. It's on them.
Although she recovered a few personal items from her luggage, she says the items she lost, including work-related medical equipment, were worth $6,000.
So far, Grace says, American Airlines has offered her $1,700 for her lost luggage.
