Jon Stewart hosts a live 'daily show' at political conventions

The daily show is solidifying plans to cover both major political conventions this summer – including two live broadcasts with Jon Stewart.

Comedy Central's late-night show — which has seen a huge ratings boost since Stewart's return in February — will air on the final night of each convention: July 18 for Republicans in Milwaukee and Aug. 22 for Democrats in Chicago. Stewart will host the episodes live, moving from his usual Monday night spot in the presenter's chair until the end of the week.

The show's news team will host the Monday-Wednesday shows (which will be recorded a few hours before they air at 11 p.m. ET/PT) during the convention weeks as part of The daily shows “Indecision 2024” cover. Correspondents Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta and Desi Lydic will be present at both convention sites; Dulcé Sloan, Lewis Black and newcomers Troy Iwata, Josh Johnson and Grace Kuhlenschmidt round out the news team.

Comedy Central also set up venues for the convention shows. The daily show will tour at the Marcus Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee July 15-18, just a few blocks from the Republican National Convention site at Fiserv Forum. In Chicago, from August 19 to 22, the show will take place at the Athanaeum Center for Thought & Culture on the city's north side, a few miles from the site of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center. The daily show won't be the only late-night show in Chicago for the Democratic convention. Stephen Colbert (himself a former Daily show regular) brings CBS Last show in town that week as well.

The 2024 congresses will resume a Daily show tradition of traveling for national party conventions in presidential election years. The series did not travel in 2020, while it was in remote production during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic — and the conventions themselves were significantly scaled back. Before that, The daily show has hit the road to at least one of the convention cities every four years since 2000.

“This is the biggest and most important election we've had in a generation,” Daily show executive producer and showrunner Jen Flanz wrote in a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month. “But so did 2000. And 2008 too. And certainly 2016. And, of course, 2020. So yes, all of these elections are really important to the fate of the nation – each in its own way. We're already at 87,209 jokes to cover this one. And if I'm lucky, we'll cover the 2028 election with our show and an incredible cast, crew and crew.
