New project bringing 'Hollywood for Games' to the UK

Business SurreyA new gaming innovation zone aims to showcase Guildford as the UK's 'gaming Hollywood'.
The hub, part of a €2.3 million scheme to promote the city's gaming heritage, includes areas for collaborative working and testing and gaming. Leading gaming companies EA, Epic and Sledgehammer are located in Guildford.
Organizers of the project, which opened at the University of Surrey, say it is the first of its kind in the UK.
Caroline Fleming, director of the Surrey Innovation District, described it as “a step forward towards the next generation of games”.
The Gaming Zone brings together academics, local game developers, creative technology leaders, amateur gamers and esports professionals to “solidify Surrey’s reputation as a leader in the global video game industry “.
Ms Fleming said: “The innovative solutions generated within the new area will help tackle the industry’s biggest challenges, demonstrating to the world Guildford’s reputation as the UK’s Hollywood for gaming. »
Dawn Redpath, director of economy and growth at Surrey County Council, said the games industry was one of the region's “real success stories”, showcasing the county and its workforce. talented work on the world stage.
One of the contributors to the project is Professor Yu Xiong, Chair of the Advisory Board of the UK Government's All-Party Parliamentary Group on Metaverse and Web 3.0.
The project is funded by the county council, Research England, University of Surrey, UCA Farnham, University of Warwick and Warwickshire County Council.
