Matthew McConaughey almost left Hollywood as he sought a change from romantic comedies

The 54-year-old actor told Interview magazine that he felt a sense of insignificance when he was continually asked to star in films such as The Wedding Planner, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days and Failure To Launch.

He said this led him to discuss with his wife the possibility of finding a new vocation, in which he considered becoming a teacher, conductor or animal guide.

McConaughey made his Hollywood debut with a supporting role in Dazed And Confused in 1993, before finding fame in starring roles in Interstellar, Dallas Buyers Club and Magic Mike.

But the actor said his career became scary when Hollywood bosses began continually asking him to star in similar roles.

He said: I used to zigzag when I felt like Hollywood wanted me to zigzag. When I had my romantic comedy years, I could only give them so much bandwidth, and they were solid hits for me. But I wanted to try other things. Of course, I couldn't do it, so I had to leave Hollywood for two years.

I have had long discussions with my wife about the need to find a new vocation, I think I will teach high school. I think I'm going to study to become a conductor. I think I'm going to become a wildlife guide.

Honestly, I thought I had left Hollywood. I got out of my lane, the lane that Hollywood told me to stay in, and Hollywood people tell me, well, fuck you, man, you should have stayed in your lane.

The days are long, the feeling of insignificance. But I decided it was what I needed to do, so I wasn't going to pull the parachute and leave the mission I was on. But it was scary, because I didn't know if I was ever going to get out of the desert.

Despite his disillusionment with the film industry, McConaughey said he never became cynical about performing my greatest hits, but added that he didn't want to rely on them.

McConaughey was interviewed by fellow American actor Glen Powell, who starred in Top Gun: Maverick, Anybody But You and Hit Man.

During the conversation, Powell said he also worried about becoming a derivative of myself and added that if he did too much work, his life would feel like a press tour.
