Legendary Hollywood actor Donald Sutherland has died at age 88 following a long illness.

Sutherland has starred in films such as MASH, Klute and The Dirty Dozen. One of the Canadian actor's notable roles was as Hawkeye Pierce, a surgeon in the 1970 film version of MASH, based on Korean War medics. Sutherland has nearly 200 film credits to his credit.
Born in New Brunswick, Canada, Sutherland began his career as a radio journalist before moving to London in 1957. He attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art while there. After that, he began playing small roles in British film and television. The Dirty Dozen was an action film set during World War II starring Sutherland and premiered in 1967. He was cast in another war film, Kelly's Heroes, as Sergeant Oddball, thanks to his eccentric attitude.
However, he was more subdued in 1971's Klute, where he played a detective aided in his search for a missing person by an expensive call girl. In Alan J. Pakula's film, Sutherland co-starred with Jane Fonda, who won an Academy Award for the role. He dated Fonda for two years before the couple broke up.
He also played an IRA member in The Eagle Has Landed, a dope-smoking college professor in National Lampoon's Animal House in the 1970s, and the title character in the 1978 remake Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Sutherland portrayed the father of a suicidal teenager in the 1980s Oscar-winning film Ordinary People. In the 2000s, he moved to television, making appearances on shows such as Commander-in-Chief and Dirty Sexy Money.
Sutherland is the father of four sons and one daughter. The Canadian actor, who has a long list of roles, received an honorary Oscar in 2017 but has never received an Oscar nomination. His death comes months before the planned release of his biography, Made Up, But Still True, which is a book about his personal acting journey.
