Veteran actor Donald Sutherland has died and made his home in Miami, Florida.
Acclaimed veteran actor Donald Sutherland, famous for his roles in “M*A*S*H,” “Ordinary People” and “The Hunger Games” among more than 200 television shows and films, died Thursday in Miami. He was 88 years old.
“With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherlanddied”, his son, actor Kiefer Sutherland posted on Instagram. “Personally, I think he is one of the most important actors in the history of cinema.
“Never intimidated by any role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and you can never ask for more than that. A life well lived,” he said .
The Canadian actor has played a large number of roles throughout his long and prolific career, becoming the wise-cracking Dr. Hawkeye Pierce in the film “M*A*S*H”, a detective in “Klute” alongside Jane Fonda, a pod person in the 1978 horror remake “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”, a convicted felon in “The Dirty Dozen”, an arsonist in Ron Howard's “Backdraft”, a vampire slayer spotter in the film “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, an 18th century Venetian explorer in 1976's “Fellini's Casanova” with director Frederico Fellini, a tobacco professor in “Animal House”, a grieving father in “Ordinary People”, a pirate legendary vaultman in the 2003 remake of “The Italian Job,” and the authoritarian villain President Snow in “The Hunger Games” franchise, among others.
Director Ron Howard praised Sutherland on Xformerly Twitter, Thursday, calling him “one of the most intelligent, interesting and captivating movie actors of all time. Incredible range, creative courage and dedication to serving the story and audiences with excellence supreme.”
Surprisingly, Sutherland never received a single Academy Award nomination, even though he received an honorary prize in 2017. He won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his work in “Citizen X” and a Golden Globe for “Path to War.”
Sutherland is survived by his wife Francine Racette, his sons Roeg, Rossif, Angus and Kiefer, as well as his daughter Rachel.
