Carol Burnett finally immortalized in a Hollywood handprint ceremony
It was a surprise to many of his admiring fans that the legendary Carole Burnett wasn't already immortalized with her handprints in Hollywood's iconic cement. That fact finally changed Thursday as she was surrounded by friends, co-stars and family in a brief ceremony outside the TCL Chinese Theater.
Before attracting decades of tourists, she said, “I grew up a few blocks from here in Yucca and Wilcox. It was a block north of Hollywood Boulevard. And when I was little, I can't count the times my grandmother and I accompanied him to Grauman's Chinese Theater. Betty Grable was one of my favorites, and I remember leaning over and placing my hands on his handprints, never dreaming that one day I would put my hands there, 80 years later.
Apple TV+ was one of the organizers of the special event, in part to campaign for Burnett's supporting actress role in the recent comedy series “Palm Royale” with Kristen Wiig. Show creator Abe Sylviaproducer/director Tate Taylor and co-stars Laura Dern, Julia Duffy, Mindy Cohn And Allison Janney were present to celebrate.
Dern said, “Of the nearly 200 people who have their handprints here, Carol knew or shared the screen with 127 of them. She worked with everyone from Douglas Fairbanks has Whoopi Goldberg, Gloria Swanson has Robin Williams, Lana Turner, Harpo Marx, George Burns, Elizabeth Taylor, Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart, Betty Grable, Jack Lemmonand I could go on and on.
The host of the ceremony was Jimmy Kimmel, just steps from its own Disney theater for “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” He began by saying that network executives wanted her to star in a comedy series rather than a variety series because “it was a man's game reserved for stars like Milton Berlé And Jackie Gleason And Dean Martin.” Even her own mother “would slap her when she made eye contact or act funny because she wanted her to act like a little lady.” He added: “Above all, he is a caring, kind and absolutely charming human being. »
Also spoke Bob Odenkirk, who starred in and produced “Better Call Saul,” for which Burnett appeared in the final season more than a year ago. He added, “My parents loved 'The Carol Burnett Show,' and so did all seven of Odenkirk's children…I couldn't believe I was watching adults who were funny and silly and genuinely happy to be together.”
The other people present were his former co-star Dick Van Dyke and costume designer Bob Mackie. All three are members of the TV Academy Hall of Fame. Also celebrating Bill Hader, Jane Lynch, Maya Rudolph, Pierre Gould And Vince Giligan.
Burnett is a seven-time Emmy winner, including one last year for her 90th birthday special. She has won a Grammy Award and received a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Kennedy Center Honors, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Carol Burnett Award at the Golden Globes.
