4. Bess Saylor Imber Memorial Service

Details: Dayton native Bess Saylor Imber, affectionately known as Miss Bess, has inspired generations of dancers associated with Dayton Ballet for more than 50 years. She died on May 3 at the age of 83. She began studying dance at age 6 at the Schwarz School of Dance with Josephine and Hermene Schwarz, founders of the Dayton Ballet. Influenced by Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham, Imber, a principal dancer with the Dayton Ballet in the 1960s, staged more than two dozen works for the Dayton Ballet. Her choreography has been performed by, among others, the Sacramento Ballet, the Tampa Ballet and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company.
