Critics Choice Association and Hollywood Creative Alliance settle dispute

The Hollywood Creative Alliance has ended its defamation lawsuit against the Critics Choice Association, with the two sides announcing Friday that they had reached an “amicable settlement.” In a joint announcement between CCA CEO Joey Berlin and HCA CEO Scott Menzel, both parties said the Critics Choice Association will once again allow its members to also be part of the Hollywood Creative Alliance.

Additionally, Berlin joined the HCA Advisory Committee to “provide guidance on best practices in award production and nonprofit management”, and the HCA agreed to advise the CCA on “best accessibility practices during its events”.

In January, the Hollywood Creative Alliance (formerly known as the Hollywood Critics Association) sued the Critics Choice Association after that organization told its members they must resign from the HCA in order to remain members of the CCA.

“The reason the CCA took this action is because we have evidence that an HCA representative falsely suggested to at least one studio (and we suspect more) that he could influence the Critics Choice Awards vote of “a manner that would have led this studio to reach out to the CCA and demand that action be taken to protect the integrity of our awards,” the Critics Choice Association had given as a reason. “Of course, this threat from the HCA was meaningless. , but the CCA cannot ignore it.

Responding to this approach with a defamation action, the HCA in court documents claimed that CCA had defamed the organization in an “attempt to boycott and steal from HCA members” and was seeking “a preliminary and permanent injunction” as well as “appropriate compensatory remedies and fees and costs” in response to the actions of the organization.

Now, as part of the agreement, “the two organizations recognize and respect the fact that they are part of the entertainment industry ecosystem which seeks to support and promote the finest achievements in cinema and television,” the organizations said in their press release.
