Actor Donald Sutherland has died at the age of 88. DW 06/20/2024
Canadian actor Donald Sutherland has died, his family announced Thursday. He was 88 years old.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” his son Kiefer Sutherland said on social media.
Sutherland won numerous accolades during his career from the 1960s to the 2020s.
A rich career on screen
Sutherland was once one of Hollywood's biggest stars thanks to his roles as Hawkeye Piece, the roguish military surgeon in “M*A*S*H,” or an eccentric tank commander, Sgt. Oddball in the movie “Kelly's Heroes”.
He was known for his tall figure and piercing eyes which helped him play both dashing leading men as well as antiheroes and villains.
Sutherland remained active long after his initial fame and won a new generation of fans in the 21st century by playing President Coriolanus Snow in “The Hunger Games.”
“Personally, I think [he was] one of the most important actors in the history of cinema. I never let myself be intimidated by any role, good, bad or ugly,” his son wrote.
“He loved what he did and did what he loved, and you can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
Sutherland attributed his illustrious career to his love of cinema.
“I like to work. I like to work with passion,” he once said in 1998.
“I love feeling my hand slip into another character's glove. I feel like a huge time of freedom is stopping for me. I'm not as crazy as I used to be, but I still am a little bit. “
Oscar nomination for acting has remained elusive
In 2017, he received an honorary Oscar for his acting, but has failed to win an Oscar in his long career. He won two Golden Globe Awards for “Citizen X” and the TV movie “Path to War.”
“I wish I could say thank you to all the characters I've played, thank them for using their lives to illuminate mine,” Sutherland said in his Honorary Oscar acceptance speech.
His talent agency CAA said: “Sutherland is survived by his wife Francine Racette, his sons Roeg, Rossif, Angus and Kiefer, his daughter Rachel and four grandchildren.”

Hollywood and Canada paid tribute to Sutherland.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Sutherland “was a man with a strong presence, brilliant at his craft and truly a great Canadian artist.”
