Hollywood needs to support more Latin American creatives
'What We Do in the Shadows' star Harvey Guillén says he didn't expect to receive an award at the National Hispanic Media Coalition's Impact Awards gala, but the work he does is never for the distinctions.
“You just do it because you wish someone would see you and be inspired to continue to be themselves and go into a field that isn't traditionally introduced to us,” Guillén said. Variety.
The gala, hosted by Mayan Lopez and Annie Gonzalez at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on June 16, honored Latin American creatives in the entertainment industry, paving the way for others to follow.
During his acceptance speech for his outstanding performance in an Impact Award series, Guillén broke down in tears, saying how moving it was to think of his younger self being told he was “too big, too poor , too noisy and that his dream was simply “. inaccessible.”
He explained that the award was not only for his younger self, but also for the next generations of queer people of color who will hopefully enter a more inclusive entertainment industry.
“The studios and the big guys have to take the risk of producing these stories,” says Guillén. Variety. “It's like pulling teeth to just be able to tell a story that represents us, when it shouldn't be that way. Take a risk.”
Other honorees of the evening included Fede Álvarez, the upcoming director of “Alien: Romulus” and 2013’s “Evil Dead,” who received the Outstanding Director Impact Award and actress Tatyana Ali, who received the Advocacy Impact Award and more.
“True Detective: Night Country” director, producer and writer Issa López received the Trailblazer Impact Award for her work on the HBO series. “True Detective” star Jodie Foster presented López with the award.
López says it's difficult to open the door to a top TV series as an immigrant and a Mexican woman: “I'm able to come together with my people and just shout, 'Here we are, and we're not going anywhere. Never.'”
“The Umbrella Academy” stars David Castañeda and Emmy Raver-Lampman accepted the ensemble impact award for the show.
Castañeda, who plays Diego Hargreeves in the series, says that to increase representation on and off screen, studios must continue to renew shows and there need to be more programs to develop young filmmakers and creatives.
“This is the beginning, you have to hatch these eggs,” Castañeda said. “There's a lot of inclusion in a lot of shows, but a lot of shows don't make it past the first and second season.”
