Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy
Fantasy football season is quickly approaching, which means it's time to start drawing up preliminary rankings and evaluating some of the most interesting situations in the league. The Kansas City Chiefs made significant investments in their wide receiver group this offseason, signing Marquise “Hollywood” Brown in free agency and drafting Texas speedster Xavier Worthy in the first round of the NFL Draft. While second-year receiver Rashee Rice will likely be suspended for part of the year, KC's receiver group is full of unknowns.
Ranking his top 80 fantasy football receivers on SI.comMichael Fabiano has three Chiefs in his top 50 but none in his top 30, an appropriate range for the Chiefs' to-be-determined wide receiver rotation.
Fabiano has Brown at #37, Rice at #40 and Worthy at #49. KC's top three wide receivers are all grouped extremely tightly, with no clear No. 1 option and potentially volatile floors and ceilings for the entire trio.
Fabiano wrote about Worthy in particular, noting that his average draft position (ADP) makes him one of the “biggest risks by ADP”, with Fabiano listing him as a WR48 while Worthy is currently drafted as a WR36:
“Worthy is a fast, exciting player who could be a great fit for Kansas City, but he’s no Tyreek Hill,” Fabiano wrote. “In fact, he may be no better than the fourth option in the passing game to Patrick Mahomes behind Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown. So, I rank him much lower.”
The most interesting part of Fabiano's rankings isn't the order of KC's WRs, it's the grouping. While Rice seems likely to miss between four and eight games (with a double-digit chance of being gone), last year's eventual WR1 could be stuck on your bench for the majority of the fantasy regular season. Brown enters a new offense and Worthy enters the league, adding even more complicated factors.
Ultimately, while this will almost certainly evolve throughout training camp, I'd be inclined to pass up Rice, wait for Worthy, and strike while the iron is hot on Brown. The suspension gamble is dangerous for Rice, and while I think Worthy will be a legitimate weapon in the Chiefs' offense in year one, I'm not sure he'll outperform Justin Watson early in the year. year. given that the Chiefs often favor the known veteran in Andy Reid's complex offense.
That leaves me a little lower on Rice and Worthy in 2024 than some, but someone has to catch Patrick Mahomes' passes! This is where Brown comes in.
Without Rice, Brown clearly projects as KC's WR1 early in the year, almost out of necessity. His entry into Reid's offense should be a little easier than Worthy's due to Brown's NFL experience and background, and the Chiefs are surely operating as if they know they'll need Brown assumes a significant workload right now. Even when Rice returns and Worthy becomes more comfortable in the offense, any relationship Brown has established with Mahomes will continue through the remainder of the season, and I expect Brown to be the No. 1 receiver of KC in 2024.
