Pirates of the Caribbean actor and surfer Tamayo Perry dies in shark attack at 49

A legendary surfer, lifeguard and actor from Honolulu who appeared in the Pirates of the Caribbean The franchise died this weekend after a shark attack, the city's Department of Emergency Services announced at a news conference, where the sad tone was punctuated with praise for the famous and beloved local.

Tamayo Perry died Sunday in the attack near Goat Island, according to Shayne Enright of the Honolulu ESD. Perry was 49 years old.

Shortly before 1 p.m. local time on Sunday, Honolulu Ocean Safety responded to emergency calls regarding an attack on a surfer around Mlaekahana Beach on the North Shore of Oahus. Enright said at a news conference following the tragedy that Honolulu Ocean Safety responders on jet skis traveled to the scene of the attack; they were unable to help Perry when they arrived and returned to shore with Perry's body. Once brought to the beach, Perry was pronounced dead by Honolulu emergency medical technicians.

Perry's body showed signs of having been bitten more than once by the shark that ultimately killed him. He was missing a leg and an arm, according to Surfer today.

It is [an] extremely difficult time for all of us. I ask for your kindness and patience as we all try to get through this next hour in the weeks and months to come, Enright said.

Local officials had kind words to say about Perry, considered a local legend. Honolulu Ocean Safety Acting Chief Kurt Lager said Perry was a lifeguard loved by everyone who was well known on the North Shore. He is a professional surfer known all over the world.

Tamayo's personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone more, Lager added. He then echoed Perry's family's request for privacy.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi also spoke about Perry's life and death during the news conference.

It's just a tragic loss. Tamayo was a legendary and highly respected waterman. He grew up here and was simply a wonderful member of our ocean safety team. So to receive a call like this on a Sunday afternoon is really hard to imagine, the mayor added.

Surfer today reports that Perry was born in 1975 and raised on the East Side of Oahus, where he first hopped on a surfboard at age 12. One of her close friends as a teenager was musician Jack Johnson, according to the publication. Perry became famous as a master of Pipelining, or surfing through the large hollow loops of water that can form on reefs. Over the years, he has competed in events such as the Billabong Pro Trials and the Pipe Masters Trials, where he took home the victory prize, as reported by the magazine.

Perry's role in the very popular Pirates of the Caribbean The franchise was a highlight of her on-screen career, which also included appearances in the 2002 female-led surfing film. Blue favorite and on the CBS series Hawaii five-0 as well as stunts in comedy The big rebound.

After his death, Ocean Safety staff placed warnings along the beach about the potential presence of sharks in the water.

Perry's Instagram account shows that in life he had a deep appreciation for the ocean and the beach.
