I know a young writer. A very, very young writer. It's unusual. Most writers are old. Very, very old.

Cade is determined to be a mystery author. He's full of ideas. Some are pretty good. Or at least pretty horrible. But this is crime writing, and in crime writing, people die athletically. And with remarkable frequency. Write what you know, is the old adage. Crime novelists scare me.

Fresh out of college, Cade has a business degree and works as a systems analyst for a giant credit card company. I asked him what systems he analyzed. He pursed his lips. I don't know, he said. It's just a title. So what are you doing ? I put data into a program, he said. Right now it's about former credit card holders in Maine, where they live, how much money they make, all that stuff. Then I send the file to my boss.

What does your boss do with it?

I have no idea.

Probably no one knows, even the boss. Cade isn't really interested in what his company does. He likes to write. My kind of young person.

Every week or so he has a few more pages to review. He's definitely improving. At first, the reader had no idea what was happening. Now you know what's going on, but don't worry about it.

Were all a work in progress. I ask him what he is reading. Or not read, because Cade is a one-writer reader, and that writer is Stephen King. He wants to be the next Stephen King, and while I can't applaud the writing, I can applaud the results. Stephen King sells books like McDonalds sells hamburgers. Probably done the same way too, but now I'm just being sarcastic.

As a more mature, or at least older, writer, I tend to see the big picture. My fear, I told Cade, is that you will become as good as Stephen King and be ignored. How is it possible? he asks.

Oh, it's possible. Think about it. You are one of the thousands, if not millions, who hold up manuscripts. Agents don't need manuscripts. They have many manuscripts, from insiders like academics, social media stars, entertainment employees, celebrities, journalists, editors and publishers, and even other agents. Agents also write books. That's probably why they're agents.

Which brings me to the best advice I can give to Cade, or any other aspiring novelist. Learning to write superbly, laudable in itself, will not get you published. Any reading of the new developments confirms this. There's not a lot of good writing. But all authors have their say, whether they are academics, social media stars, etc.

The key to success? Become an insider.

I guess.

Then, when you're ready, or at least finished with your manuscript, you'll have someone's ear.

But if I write a great novel, won't I have someone's ear?

No.

Working in the industry is key. Cade said he would think about it, but I could see what he was really thinking. He is young and idealistic, with plenty of time to make mistakes. I'm just an old complainer. I guess I could have told him to get married, or at least date an agent. It seems less brutal. But first you need to find the agent, and now we're back to square one.
