Prince will posthumously receive his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

MINNEAPOLIS — While the music world is still getting carried away celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of Prince's monument “Purple rain“, another honor has been announced for the late Minneapolis rock superstar: a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Prince will be one of the rare posthumous stars rarely rewarded. The Minneapolis native died April 21, 2016 at age 57 following a fentanyl overdose Paisley Park, his workshop in Chanhassen. At the time of his death, the prince had never been nominated for a starand no documents were ever sent to finalize one.

Prince's imminent addition to the famous Hollywood promenade was announced by, among others, his fellow “Minneapolis sound” collaborator and ex-member of The Time, Jimmy Jam.

There are nearly 2,800 stars on the Walk of Fame. According to the organization that maintains and develops the Hollywood tourist attraction, only one posthumous star is allowed each year, and is subject to a two-year waiting period. Ray Liotta, Luciano Pavarotti, Carrie Fisher and Jenni Rivera are among the stars recently awarded posthumously, according to the organization.

Prince joins Fantasia, Depeche Mode, Los Bukis, The B-52s, Green Day, The Isley Brothers, Busta Rhymes, George Strait, Keith Urban and WAR among the recording industry's newest additions to the march.

Other entertainment figures who were announced for star honors this week include Jane FondaJohn Carpenter, David BeckhamEmilio Estevez, Colin Farrell, Bill Nye, Molly Shannon and Fran Drescher, president of the Screen Actor Guild.

Last weekend, the First Avenue nightclub — which gained national notoriety thanks to its central role in “Purple Rain” — was the scene of a massive party in Minneapolis, as fans converged to pay tribute to Purple One's best-selling album. While some took photos and explored the venues where Prince performed, others rushed to Prince's favorite music store, Electric fetusto add to their collection of all things Prince.

A new musical version of “Purple Rain” is set to debut in Minneapolis before its Broadway run in spring 2025.
