Two poets linked to the nation's premier academic center for black poetry will be in Charlottesville this week to read from their works.
Lauren K. Alleyne and Leona Sevick, who both have ties to the Furious Flower Poetry Center at James Madison University, will be at the New Dominion Bookstore at Charlottesvilles Downtown Mall at 7 p.m. Friday.
Alleyne, executive director of the Poetry Center and professor of English at JMU, will read excerpts from her recent works. Sevick, who serves on the advisory board of the Furious Flower Poetry Center and is dean and professor of English at Bridgewater College, will read from her new collection, The Bamboo Wife, published by Trio House Press.
Alleyne has written two collections of poetry, Honeyfish and Difficult Fruit, as well as two chapbooks, Down in the Kaatskills and (Un)Becoming Gretel. The co-editor of Furious Flower: Seeding the Future of African American Poetry is from the twin Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
Alleyne received a US Artist Award nomination, an NAACP Image Award nomination for outstanding poetry, and the Green Rose Prize from New Issues. She received the JMU Agency Star Award and an Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia in 2022.
Sevick teaches Asian American literature at Bridgewater College. She is the recipient of the 2017 Press 53 Poetry Award for her first full-length collection of poems, Lion Brothers.
Sevick's recent work appears in Orion, Birmingham Poetry Review, Blackbird, the Southern Review, and the Sun.
