Hollywood Workers Union Reaches Wage, AI Use Deal With Top Studios

A union representing Hollywood film and television crews announced Tuesday that it has reached a tentative three-year agreement with major studios that includes pay increases and safeguards against the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Members of the International Alliance of Stage Performance Employees (IATSE), which includes lighting technicians and costume designers, must ratify the agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents Disney, Netflix and others.

The terms of the agreement include rate increases of 7%, 4% and 3.5% over the three-year term, the union said.

Regarding AI, the agreement includes “language that ensures that no employee is required to provide prompts to Al in a manner that would result in the displacement of a covered employee.”

In late 2023, the actors union SAG-AFTRA and the studios reached a labor agreement that ended a nearly six-month dispute that had halted film and television production.

That contract also included pay raises and streaming bonuses that union leaders said amounted to more than $1 billion over three years, and also included protection around the use of AI in filmmaking.
