NJ Opens West Coast Office to Showcase AI and Hollywood
A new center run by the nonprofit group Choose New Jersey will introduce the Garden State to California businesses, particularly film and television in Hollywood and artificial intelligence, or AI, in the Silicon Valley region.
The center will be the fifth office operated by Choose New Jersey, which is funded by several of the state’s largest businesses and utilities and funds the state’s many economic outreach efforts. Its stated mission is to attract businesses to New Jersey, and it has paid Gov. Phil Murphy to conduct economic trade missions.
The new center will officially open on July 15 in San Francisco, generally considered the heart of Silicon Valley, a long-established high-tech hub.

The West Coast has long been considered the home of the technology and film industries, but a whole new world of opportunity is emerging right here in the Garden State, Gov. Phil Murphy said in the announcement from Wednesday.
Murphy and his entourage had already visited the West Coast this spring in an effort to introduce New Jersey to companies in Hollywood and Silicon Valley.
The center will be staffed solely by Choose New Jersey's chief strategy officer, Tim Crouch, a former executive at the U.K.'s Foreign Trade Office who worked primarily in North America.
According to the announcement, Crouch will travel frequently to Southern California and the Pacific Northwest, meeting with some of the world's most innovative companies as they expand beyond their home markets in California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.
“As they look to tap into new markets, new ideas and new talent, my job is to make sure they know about the amazing things happening in New Jersey,” Crouch said.
What will the Choose NJ center do?
Ingrid Austin, a spokeswoman for Choose NJ, said centers already open in Germany, Israel, India and Ireland have led to an explosion of business interest in New Jersey.
He did not provide data on which companies have actually moved to the Garden State or partnered with New Jersey companies.
Joseph Foudy, a professor at New York University's Stern School of Business, said it was “very difficult to prove one way or another the effectiveness of these types of centers.”

Foudy said these types of centers are increasingly being used by countries, states and cities around the world.
It just increases your visibility as a location to someone who may not be familiar with the area, Foudy continued.
As state officials often tout, New Jersey is located between the job markets of New York and Philadelphia, sits along the Interstate 95 corridor and the Northeast Corridor rail line, and has two major universities in research: Rutgers and Princeton, as well as their Talent offerings.
And the state has a wide range of tax subsidy programs that businesses will want to take advantage of, Foudy said.
These programs are intended to jump-start large businesses, start-ups, film and television projects, and redevelopment projects.
Robert Scott, an economist at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, said that “attracting just one or two companies to open operations in New Jersey more than covers the expenses of the subsidiary office.”
What is AI? What's the point ?
AI, and more specifically generative AI, is a technology that processes data from the Internet like a human to create text content, images, videos and music based on user instructions.
Its appearance allowed people who were not computer scientists and did not know how to write code to make their computer perform in a few seconds tasks that would have taken them minutes, hours or days before: responding to emails, write marketing brochures, design a magazine cover.
Generative AI could be used for more mundane tasks that might otherwise take hours or days, and searching for data becomes easier.
In the foreground was OpenAia San Francisco-based company founded in 2015 to create a publicly accessible generative AI platform.
Its backers include Elon Musk, Amazon and Microsoft. And he deployed ChatGPT, which generates text, and GIVE HIMwhich generates digital images, with new versions offering increasingly human responses.
It's an industry Murphy called the Garden State's moon industry.
It's like a Wild West, said Aaron Price, CEO of Tech United, a trade group for New Jersey's high-tech industry.
What are the disadvantages of AI?
The technology has huge drawbacks.
The Federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has warned that before the 2024 electionsGenerative AI could be used by foreign adversaries, cybercriminals, and any other members of the public to portray political figures in compromising positions or utter controversial statements that they did not actually make.
USA TODAY reported on the prevalence of AI-generated nude images of famous and non-famous people. The graphic images generated by Taylor Swift are a glaring example of this. ChatGPT, on the other hand, has been used to generate academic essays by students, which is essentially a form of cheating.
That needs guardrails, Teik Lim, president of the Newark-based New Jersey Institute of Technology, said in an interview this spring.
Film Projects in New Jersey
Since 2018, New Jersey state officials have approved more than $720 million in tax grants for cinema, television And digital multimedia productionspublic records show.
They include support for Audible in Newark, Steven Spielberg's “West Side Story,” filmed in Paterson, and Zack Snyder's “Army of the Dead,” filmed in Atlantic City, as well as the “Sopranos” prequel “The Many Saints of Newark and World Wrestling Entertainment in the Meadowlands.
That doesn't count the massive movie studios coming to New Jersey, including Netflix in Fort Monmouth, Lionsgate in Newark, 1888 Studios in Bayonne and another studio in West Orange and those already here, like Cinelease Studios in Jersey City.
“I'm sure they think that with Netflix opening the big studio at the old Fort Monmouth, they might be able to capitalize on that move by attracting other similar or complementary businesses to the state.” , said Scott, the Monmouth economist.
State officials estimate that more than $2 billion has been spent on film projects and the ancillary economy in New Jersey since 2018.
Many state officials and film industry insiders say New Jersey's massive film and television tax credit program has buoyed the industry in the Garden State.
Making the math work is a big deal, Murphy said of the tax subsidies in an interview with NorthJersey.com. Its table stakes are necessary.
