Downtown Hampton Peninsula movie theater goes dark again
Like any good movie that's been remade, the movie theater at the Peninsula Town Center in Hampton has gone through several iterations over the past 14 years.
The latest, EVO Entertainment, abruptly closed its doors on June 17. Attempts to reach the Austin, Texas-based leadership group through its website, telephone and email were unsuccessful.
The cinema opened in June 2010 as CineBistro, a concept developed by a cinema company based in Birmingham, Alabama. In addition to eight movie theaters featuring 40-inch leather seats with swivel dining tables, the approximately 50,000-square-foot building also housed a bistro, a bar and a nine-lane bowling alley. Movie fans enjoyed a premium menu including salmon and steak, wine and cocktails. At the time, the venue was only open to people over 21 after 8 p.m.
Fred Meyers, then executive director of CineBistro, said in a 2010 Daily Press article about the opening that the theater took the time-honored dinner and movie to “new heights.” Seven years later, in July 2017, the resort was under new management and renamed Peninsula Movie Bistro.
Phoenix Theaters Entertainment, a Knoxville, Tenn.-based company, installed power reclining seats and call buttons. Score Bowling remained in business. The company has also added movie theater-style meals, including soft pretzels, hot dogs and flatbread pizzas. Under Phoenix's leadership, Peninsula Movie Bistro lowered its age policy to make it more family-friendly.
But within two years, the movie theater had new management again. In February 2019, Studio Movie Grill opened its first Virginia location at the Peninsula Town Center. The Dallas-based company was known for operating theater-style catered venues and kept the facilities as is.
Studio Movie Grill temporarily closed all of its locations in March 2020 due to the pandemic and the Hampton location remained closed, according to a 2022 Daily Press story.
In May 2022, EVO Entertainment Group reopened the eight-screen venue after renovating the theater and bowling alley and adding an arcade. The Hampton location was the company's expansion outside of its Texas market.
Now the EVO website only lists 12 theaters under its belt and the Hampton location is no longer shown. The company, retaining EVO as a brand, was renamed Elevate in October 2023.
