Poor Vashu Bhagnani. The Pooja Entertainment producer has been going through fires after his last film, the Akshay Kumar-Tiger Shroff starrer Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan, failed to perform as expected at the box office. It follows Vashuji's earlier films which met a similar fate. This was enough for nasty rumors to start circulating in Bollywood that the popular filmmaker was forced to sell his multi-storey Pooja Entertainment office building in Mumbai's tony Juhu neighborhood to repay debts amounting to nearly Rs. 250 million. Adding fuel to the fire were wild rumors that Vashuji was now laying off 80 percent of his production staff.
Fed up with the rumour mill spewing lies about his situation, the producer gave an interview that started going viral on social media in which he clarified that the Pooja Entertainment office building was not being sold. He was actually the owner. And he had plans to redevelop it that were put on hold during the making of Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan. “It will be a tower that will house luxury homes,” Vashuji said. He addressed the growing rumours that actors in his films were aggressively following up on their unpaid dues. “Akshay Kumar ji called me and said he is with me and I shouldn’t worry. And so did several other actors.
Despite this, some sections of the Bollywood press continued to viciously target the production house on social media by posting stories about how Vashuji suffered a series of box office disasters that led to its ruin. A trade source said sympathetically: “Vashuji should be given a fair chance to clear his name and all debts credited to him. People should also refrain from calling him out unfairly as he rebuilds his brand and image. No one should forget that Vashuji and Pooja Entertainment have also produced hit films including Biwi No. 1, Coolie No. 1, Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, Coolie No. 1 and Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai.
