Country music star Darius Rucker appears in court on drug charges

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WSMV/Gray News) – Country music star Darius Rucker appeared in a Tennessee court Tuesday in connection with his drug charges in Williamson County.

Rucker, best known as the lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish, was arrested on February 1stnearly a year after being found with psychedelic drugs during a traffic stop in Franklin.

He appeared before Judge Denise André.

The 58-year-old wore a suit and glasses when he appeared in court for a arraignment.

Ruckers' attorney said his client has been fully cooperating with law enforcement since his arrest.

A Franklin Police Department officer said he stopped Rucker for a traffic violation when he was arrested on Feb. 23, 2023.

The officer said he smelled marijuana coming from the singers' van.

Police said Rucker told them he smoked weed in the vehicle, but not that night.

Officers said they found 14 unstamped, grayish and purple pills, a THC pen and marijuana in his vehicle.

Rucker told police his girlfriend gave him the items and he did not know what the pills were.

An arrest warrant was later signed after the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said the pills tested positive for psilocybin, a psychedelic and controlled substance.

Rucker faces charges including simple possession, casual exchange and violation of the registration law, all misdemeanors.

He was released from the county jail on $10,500 bond and his court date was rescheduled for September 10.
