Explore the dreamlike promise and changing intentions of the Hollywood Sign, an icon perched in the hills above Los Angeles. In 1923, the sign was originally called Hollywoodland. Explore how artists responded to its larger-than-life qualities. The sign became a symbol of the glamour and promise of the American film industry. Industries beyond the Los Angeles area borrowed the term, such as Dollywood and Bollywood. In the early 20th century, the sign reflected the bustling, larger-than-life film industry of Los Angeles. Analyze artistic interpretations of the sign and discuss whether, today, given the prevalence of streaming video and film production in cities outside California, the symbol still holds its original promise.
