IATSE reaches agreement on regional standards

IATSE has reached tentative agreement on the Regional Standards Agreement, the contract that covers 20,000 film and television workers across the country, including those in Louisiana, New Mexico and Georgia.

The agreement follows the basic agreement, which applies to 13 Los Angeles-based locals, and was reached Tuesday. Both contracts must now be ratified by members.

The contracts are broadly similar, although the minimum rates are lower in the regional standards agreement. The agreement covers 23 IATSE local chapters, whose jurisdiction applies throughout the United States except Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York.

IATSE won a 7 percent raise in the first year of both contracts, followed by 4 percent and 3.5 percent increases. The ASA also includes “additional regional wage adjustments,” the union said, as well as a 33 percent increase in subsistence allowance for “proximity hires.”

Both contracts also provide for triple pay once the working day reaches 15 hours.

The union also secured additional residual funds to help cover a $670 million deficit in the pension and health plans.

Now that the two contracts have been concluded, more details are expected to be shared with members, particularly on the issue of artificial intelligence. This was a major issue in the negotiations, although so far IATSE has only said that its members would not be forced to write AI prompts that would put other members out of work.

Negotiations on both contracts have been underway since the first week of March. While there was some saber-rattling early on, the negotiations have gone relatively smoothly, without recourse to a strike authorization vote or even the threat of one.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which negotiates on behalf of the studios, can now devote its full attention to the Teamsters and other unions in the basic trades — plumbers, plasterers, electricians and laborers.

The Teamsters' contract expires July 31. The Teamsters suggested the studios weren't showing enough “urgency” to reach a deal, perhaps suggesting a bumpier ride.
