The prequel A Quiet Place: Day One is full of heroes and monsters, but all I could focus on was the cat. The heroes are, let's be honest, strangely impressive: Samira (Lupita Nyongo) is a cancer patient dying in a hospice, yet capable of walking very long distances across Manhattan, swimming between stations flooded subways and running very fast while carrying your cat. Eric (Joseph Quinn) does the same things, but wears a tie, because he's British (this is, alas, his only character note). These two are among the last humans left in New York after an alien invasion, involving monsters that look like what would happen if you put a gorilla and a giant spider in a blender (note to self: don't that) and which are reasonably good. to run up the sides of buildings and appear in random places looking malicious. But oh, that cat.
I emphasize the cat here, because there's nothing else to focus on in A Quiet Place: Day One, an indication that perhaps what made the first two Quiet Place films work was the writer/director John Krasinski, who here gives the reins (or, rather, the cat's leash) to Michael Sarnoski. This cat named Frodo and played by feline actors Nico and Schnitzel, both of whom should be nominated for Oscars immediately, is the coldest creature who has ever walked this earth: he does not flinch in the face of deafening space invasions, he has looking perfectly calm when immersed in space. waters off South Street Harbor, casting sympathetic glances at humans who seem strangely disconcerted by the need to run for their lives. As someone whose cat practically needs therapy every time the vacuum cleaner is turned on, this fascinated me. Why was Frodo so clean and spotlessly white all the time, even though all of Manhattan and Samira were shrouded in gray dust? Was he secretly a Marvel Comics superhero cat? Does he just have a really good agent?
Regardless, I need hardly say that Nyongo’s prodigious talents are sadly wasted in this loud, pointless film, which never approaches the intelligence or genuine fear of the first two in the franchise. The central premise of sound-reactive monsters doesn’t even make sense here, as Eric and Samira seem to talk the entire time; he even, at one ill-advised moment, starts reading poetry to her, as one does in times of interplanetary war. (At least, I think it was poetry; honestly, at this point in the film, who would have thought.) Regardless, could someone give Frodo his own franchise? I’d look.
