Tornado warning forces Wisconsin wedding party to join another family's reunion

Severe storms didn't stop a couple from sharing a special first dance as they took refuge on the shores of Lake Geneva on their wedding day.

LAKE GENEVA, Wisconsin – Severe storms last Saturday canceled and delayed festivals, concerts and other outdoor events in southeastern Wisconsin.

But bad weather didn't stop one couple from sharing a special first dance while sheltering in place on their wedding day.

“We wanted to do an outdoor ceremony, so we were very worried about the rain,” said Alex Schilke.

It's not the wedding story Alex and Sarah Schilke expected to tell, but when Saturday's storms hit Lake Geneva, the newlyweds realized rain was the least of their worries.

“Everyone received alerts that there was now a tornado warning, and that there was a risk of tornadoes in the county, and that we needed to seek shelter immediately,” Alex said.

Wedding guests headed to the basement of the Grand Geneva Resort where another group was holding their family reunion.

“Then the power goes out, and chaos ensues,” Sarah said.

Out of the darkness, Jack Jones and a group of strangers let the couple shine for a moment.

“I think at that moment we could all feel that this was something special, really special,” Jones said.

Jones played Ed Sheeran's “Perfect” as the Schilkes danced for the first time surrounded by people they loved — some they didn't even know.

“I was so grateful that the water lines started coming,” Sarah said.

“There wasn’t a dry eye in the room,” Alex said.

The video of the special moment was posted on TikTok and has accumulated over 800,000 views.

Even though things didn't go as planned, the Schilkes didn't want to change anything.
