Eighth grade delivers an enchanting performance of Beauty and the Beast JR
The Redgrave Theatres auditorium was transformed into an enchanting world of magic and romance with the Grade 8 class’s highly anticipated production of Beauty and the Beast. The students’ take on this beloved tale showcased their enthusiasm, dedication and talent.
From the moment the curtain rose, the audience was transported to the picturesque village where Belle, played by the talented Maggie, dreams of adventure beyond the confines of her small town. Maggie’s portrayal of Belle was captivating; her voice soared during “Belle” and “Home,” perfectly capturing the character’s desire and spirit.
Olonya's performance as the Beast was one of the highlights of the evening. His transformation from intimidating creature to tender and caring prince was beautifully executed. Her rendition of “If I Cant Love Her” was both powerful and poignant, leaving many audience members teary-eyed.
The supporting cast was equally impressive. Zara brought a sense of humor and impeccable timing to the role of Lumire, with her performance of “Be Our Guest” being a breathtaking performance that had the audience applauding. Meanwhile, Emilia, as Mrs. Samovar, delivered a heartwarming performance, with her rendition of the eponymous song “Beauty and the Beast” providing one of the most memorable moments of the evening. Not to be overlooked, Gaston, played by Rufus, was delightfully arrogant and rowdy, with “Gaston” and “The Mob Song” showcasing his strong stage presence and vocal prowess.
The technical aspects of the production were equally commendable. The set design was innovative and detailed, making the transition between the provincial village and the large and sinister castle. The lighting design captured the location and atmosphere beautifully. Five Year 8 students helped backstage and in the light box, giving them a glimpse of other theater roles.
The choreography, supervised by Casey, was energetic and precise, particularly during the ensemble numbers Gaston and Be Our Guest, which were executed flawlessly.
