3 Arrested After Child Left Unattended and Malnourished at Hollywood Hotel

HOLLYWOOD, Florida. A man and two women tasked with babysitting a child at a Hollywood hotel were arrested Thursday after police said they left him unattended, without food and suffering from severe rashes on his body.

Hollywood police officers were called by a manager at the Delmar Hotel, located at 315 Arthur St., who reported seeing a young child running around the hotel courtyard unsupervised for hours around 4 p.m. Thursday.

Police said they found the child sitting under a table, wearing only a diaper and with a visible rash on his stomach. Temperatures were reportedly around 90 degrees at the time.

Authorities contacted a housekeeper, who informed officers in Spanish that the child had been unsupervised since 10 a.m.

Officers then went to the bedroom where the child was located. Inside, they found John Harper, 62, and Caridad Marichal, 34, asleep. They said their attempts to contact the child's mother were unsuccessful.

Inside the hotel room, officers detected a foul odor of soiled diapers, urine and expired food scattered throughout the room.

The child, who pointed out a red, itchy rash on her stomach, told police: “It hurts a lot,” according to an arrest report.

He also said he had not eaten all day and did not know where his mother was, police said.

When asked who looked after him, the child replied: “I don’t know. Mom is not home,” according to the report.

Police said a search of public records revealed Harper had two outstanding arrest warrants in Broward County.

Before officers left the scene, the child's mother arrived and explained that she had flown halfway across the country, according to investigators.

The reason for his departure was redacted in the report that was made public.

Authorities said the Department of Children and Families will take over the case.

Jail records show Harper, Marichal and a third suspect, whom police identified as Karina Banyionte, 30, each face one count of child neglect without serious bodily injury.

As of Friday, the three suspects were each being held on $2,500 bail at the Broward Main Jail.
