Jenni Rivera's star unveiled on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (CNS) — Jenni Rivera's star was unveiled on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday in honor of the late Mexican singer, five days before the 55th anniversary of her birth.

Singer Gloria Trevi spoke at the ceremony, which took place at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Capitol Records building. Rivera's five children (Jacqie, Johnny, Chiquis, Jenicka and Michael) accepted the star in her honor.

Trevi said she was honored to speak at the event “honoring and celebrating the beautiful life of a brilliant and distinguished woman.”

Rivera “lives on through all of us who love and admire him,” Trevi said.

The star has been numbered 2,783 since the Walk of Fame was completed in 1961 with the initial 1,558 stars. Other featured artists in front of the Capitol Records building include The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks, Selena, Neil Diamond, Duran Duran, Alejandro Sanz and Helen Reddy.

“Jenni’s star represents not only her incredible accomplishments as an artist, but also her resilience, courage and unwavering spirit that continues to inspire her fans around the world,” said Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The self-proclaimed “Diva de la Banda” has received 18 Lo Nuestro Awards, including nine consecutive awards for Best Regional Mexican Music Artist, 22 Billboard Latin Music Awards and two Billboard Music Awards.

Rivera released 12 albums during his life with songs on topics ranging from relationships to social issues.

“Jenni” and the pop version of “Joyas Prestadas” topped the Billboard Latin music charts in the United States, while “Mi Vida Loca”, “La Gran Señora” and the group version of “Joyas Prestadas” reached second place.

Born Dolores Janney Rivera Saavedra to Mexican immigrant parents in Long Beach on July 2, 1969, Rivera earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Long Beach City College. He worked in real estate before beginning his music career in 1992.

Rivera died in a plane crash near Monterrey, Mexico on December 9, 2012, at the age of 43. Long Beach named a park in his memory in 2016.
