Salt Lake City, Smith Entertainment Group close to deal for downtown development

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Salt Lake City and Smith Entertainment Group are nearing finalization of an agreement to develop a new entertainment district in the heart of downtown and a renovation of the Delta Center.

In a joint statement, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall and Smith Entertainment Group said they are continuing negotiations on the deal and expect it to be sent to the Salt Lake City Council early next week.

The City Council was scheduled to vote on a proposal for the entertainment district on Tuesday, July 2, but that may now be delayed.

“Due to next week's recess and to give Council members and the public ample opportunity to review the details prior to possible approval, we anticipate that discussion of the agreement will take place on July 2 and that a possible vote related to the agreement will take place on July 9,” the statement read.

The subject of a new entertainment district in Salt Lake City has been a controversial one.

Earlier this year, the Utah State Legislature pass a law This would give the Salt Lake City Council the power to increase the city's sales tax by up to 0.5 percent to help fund redevelopment.

The Salt Lakers too rose in support of the protection of Abravanel Hall, home of the Utah Symphony, which currently stands in the way of development of the planned entertainment district. Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson expressed support for the building, saying she preferred it where it is. However, a recent study found the building “outdated” and in need of a $200 million renovation.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox has previously expressed support for the entertainment district, saying Salt Lake City's current layout doesn't create a vibrant gathering place.
